A Shatin Story

a welcome photo by the HKSTPC board
"excuse me, ah. caramel apple spice and ah, cinnamon butter toast" a voice stammered behind me, as ling and i grabbed onto the nearest pole to steady ourselves on the packed train back from science park.

ling was facing him, so i could see her already direct gaze intensifying (per usual aggressive stare-down mode)."i have been following you for 3 stops, since shatin", ventured the local man sporting a cross-body messenger bag. his words sounded bold and otherwise creepy, but he delivered them apprehensively.

i turned around. a sense of familiarity.

"you work in a bank. not korean, not japanese. overseas - american...i think," he said with more confidence. "but looks different - no thick glasses today". i smiled in assent, this boy was on a roll.

"i quit in april, but i used to see you. i remember every customer's orders. by the way, we are introducing caramel apple spice in a few months" he revealed.

then it hit me: my favorite barista from starbucks in citibank tower!! the one i used to tease about not having my go-to sbux order in the states: 1 pump caramel apple spice, with extra whipped cream. in hk , they have a substitute drink that's basically microwaved apple juice with syrup. blasphemous, really.

he explained that he had been taking night classes while earning extra cash making drinks at starbucks, but recently left upon acceptance to law school. a barrister in training, he was en route to attending a lecture in kowloon tong. after some rejoicing, we bid adieu and continued on our respective ways. a truly serendipitous meeting - only in hong kong.

in other news, we officially have REAL ESTATE at the incuapp centre in science park. hollerrrr

pretty psyched about being "incubated", think there's something to be said about having somewhat of a safety net.  it's been months since we initially submitted the app, did the interview, and waited (and waited and waited) for the panel's deliberation, so it's good to finally be signed and sealed. but ling is in singapore and i will be in taiwan for the next few days on business, so we'll have to check it out again later!

  1. I love the science park. I have a friend that lives in Fotan and sometimes we ride our bikes along the river and then grab lunch at the very good Italian rest. at the science park.

    Congratulations on the incubation!
